How to save money when upgrading your laptop hard drive

By Jesse | August 4, 2008

If you’ve bought a laptop in the past 2 years the odds are that it has a SATA hard drive in it. The nice thing about hard drives is they are easily upgradeable, with the cost of a new drive running approximately $100-$200. Here’s a tip, instead of buying a standard SATA hard drive, instead buy a small 2.5″ hdd like a blueberry from simpletech or a Western Digital Passport Drive. Usually these are about the same or often a little less than the regular drive.. In addition to the drive, you’re also getting a USB casing that you can use with your old hard drive that you’re about to remove.

Once you buy the drive just remove the screws, for the Western Digital Passport drives, slide a screwdriver or knife between the two halves of the casing.. The Western digital drive cases do not open all the way- just enough that you can slide the drive out.. If you open it all the way you might not be able to easily put it back together.

Then just swap the drives. You’ll have saved about 15% plus have a casing all for free!
