Fix for: “SQL server was not detected on __________…” when adding the ADRMS service role

By Jesse | June 22, 2011

If you are trying to add the ADRMS Role to your server and cannot validate the server (when you type the server name), verify that you granted LOCAL ADMIN rights for the user you’re logged in with to the SQL Box.

If you get the “SQL server was not detected on…. and it fails to validate, it’s generally either related to the firewall rules on the SQL server or the fact that the user you’re currently logged in with doesnt have local admin rights on sql.

Once you’ve added the user to the local admins group, usually your problem will go away.

Microsoft is making a remote registry request to the sql box to get the sql instances available.  it is NOT making a request to port 1433 which is why granting SA rights and access to 1433 is not enough.
