Outlook wont connect to Exchange: Disconnected

I ran into a strange bug in exchange 2010. If you are on a local/closed network with no gateway (say for testing purposes), Outlook will never connect to exchange and stays disconnected. After running a packet sniffer to watch the traffic I saw exchange for some odd reason INSISTS on having a gateway set.. It can be a completely bogus gateway (say the machine’s IP again) but something must fill in the gateway options.

Once you’ve added some setting for gateway Exchange will function normally.
