I was recently examining a co-worker’s new Android phone and so far my impressions are favorable. It runs a linux variant so it is likely to have many free downloadable apps. However, I did notice one potential security flaw:

Instead of the standard “enter a password to unlock” that most phones have, on the G-Phone, you draw a shape between 9 dots using the touch-screen. I noticed that since fingers leave oil marks behind on glass, it’s relatively easy to “crack” the password just by tilting the phone in bright light to see where the smudges are. It’s an old trick, but it worked well- I guessed the password on my second try.

I recently downgraded a laptop from Windows Vista to Windows XP Pro with SP3. In doing so, I found I had to go gather the drivers from Lenovo’s website myself. Lenovo has a great site for doing this with relative ease, but I found I had two devices that were still a mystery.

PCI/VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_20CA17AA

and

PCI/VEN_1180&DEV_0843&SUBSYS_20C917AA

It turns out that they are related to the SD 4-in-1 card reader by Ricoh. After installing the drivers for it from the Lenovo site, both devices were recognized sucessfully.
